Last night Joey and I went to a viewing of Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Music Box Theatre downtown. This is one of my favorite movies, and for years I had been wanting to go on Halloween, in costume(for more pictures of the evening’s festivities, see my photostream). I knew ahead of time this would be an audience participation showing, which basically means people throw things all over the place based on cues in the film, and actors would be acting out scenes in sync with the movie. What I DIDN’T know, was audience participation also meant people would be screaming out stupid, wit-deprived lines based on a dumb script. In a theater of 800 or so people, all these extra lines just amounted to a steady drone of yelling and resulted in me not really being able to enjoy the movie.
This isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy myself. I got to see a lot of really weird and crazy people dressed up on Halloween. I got drunk IN PUBLIC, and I also PEED IN AN ALLEY. My new friend from MySpace we met up with there shared his goodies with us, and we threw confetti, paper plates, and playing cards at the people in the rows in front of us. I got to see Rocky be played by a morbidly obese girl who wore nothing but red star pasties and gold booty shorts (okay, so that wasn’t so much FUN as it was TERRIFYING and PSYCHOLOGICALLY SCARRING). Overall I’d say it was a good night, but next year I think we’ll host a private engagement of Rocky Horror Picture Show in the privacy of our own home.
